UK: Tesco has lowest market share for seven years

The bad news continues for Tesco, the UK's biggest supermarket, after it recently saw shares prices devalued. It appears Tesco is losing market share to low cost supermarkets in these troubled economic times. Natural enough you may think, but it is also losing out to the other large supermarket chains in the UK.

Tesco has admitted it messed up its Christmas pricing, during which time it was locked into a price war with Asda, Morrisons and Sainsburys.

Iceland have soared to their highest market position in 10 years and Aldi and Lidl have also seen gradual increases.

Sainsburys has achieved a slightly higher market share of 16.7%, up from 16.6% last year.

Asda, more significantly, increased its share from 16.9% to 17.5%.

Meanwhile Tesco dropped below 30% market share for the first time in 7 years. It does, however, still have a considerable lead on its competitors.
