Avocados still in high demand but supply is low

Mexico asparagus season just getting started

Asparagus in Mexico is just getting started for Giumarra; they’re excited about their program. “The quality looks fantastic. We’ll have promotional volume all the way through April,” said Gary Caloroso, Director of Marketing for Giumarra Borquez.

Springtime equals high demand for asparagus when it seems to be on everyone’s menu at home and in restaurants. Guimarra works closely with its partner grower Campos Borquez out of Mexico. The farm was the first ever Fair Trade USA certified asparagus grower in the world, said Caloroso. “The quality of the product is very important to us. We’re proud of what Pablo and his family has done there and we’re very proud of the product and the high quality of asparagus we get from them every year.”

Even though the Super Bowl has passed, demand for avocados is still strong but supply has decreased. “As an industry we’re experiencing lower supply than this time last year,” he said. “Demand continues to outpace supply across the country.” Hiccups involved with the inauguration of the new president didn’t affect Giumarra. Caloroso says they’ve been able to maintain steady supply volumes to date.
