Wisconsin woman gets nose broken by fruit thrown from balcony

A 27-year-old Waukesha woman suffered a broken nose when she was hit by a piece of fruit thrown from a downtown balcony, according to a release from Madison police.

Police said the woman was in Madison visiting friends and she and a friend were crossing West Gorham Street at about 2:25 a.m. Saturday. Several young men yelled at them to “watch out” because someone was throwing oranges and beer from a balcony on the upper floors of the Equinox apartment building, according to the release. The warning prompted the woman to tilt up her head, and a piece of fruit struck her in the nose.

She said she heard a “crack” and knew her nose was broken. Officers said her face was bloody and she was crying when they arrived.

Officers said they found about a dozen dented beer cans and an equal number of split oranges on the sidewalk. They were unable to pinpoint from which apartment the fruit and cans were tossed.
