Volume should build
When the imports start flowing in for Altar, Stewart predicts volume will come on. “There is demand for asparagus but I think a lot of retailers are waiting for the volume,” says Stewart. “I think they’re keeping their orders to a minimum just due to the price. By next week it should probably start coming off because we’ll start getting some volume, but not big numbers.” And of course with the increase in volume, comes an anticipated drop in price—right now, Stewart notes that, while some shippers have availability, the market is still high and product is ranging from $48-$52 on 11 lbs. “By next week we’ll probably see mid to low $40s,” says Stewart. “Another week and it’ll probably drop another $28-$30. It’ll drop $10 every week.” With that logic, Stewart anticipates seeing good numbers heading into Valentine’s Day mid-February.
