Michigan governor vetoes bill to end mushroom certification

The Governor of Michigan, Rick Snyder, has vetoed a bill that would have eliminated training and certification requirements for people who sell morel mushrooms to businesses.

In a letter released Thursday, Governor Snyder said there's been an increase in demand for wild mushrooms by food establishments, but there has also been an increase in poisonings related to morels.

He added that the formal certification course was developed to make sure people selling wild mushrooms could tell the difference between safe and toxic varieties.

"It's important that wild mushrooms entering our food supply meet the same high safety standards as other products and ingredients," Governor Snyder said.
