Medfly quarentine grows in San Fernando Valley

After previous efforts, agricultural officials are increasing the quarantine of the medfly to a 101-square mile quarantine. The quarantine is planned to restrict the movement of the fruit, produce and ornamental plants in the San Fernando Valley hoping that it will stifle the movement of the fly.

They will also release sterile male flies will be released over the next few weeks in a broader area to interfere with mating cycles.

The medfly is considered the most serious threat to the state’s agricultural industry, affecting about 250 types of fruits and vegetables, including citrus, grapes, pitted fruits, tomatoes and other significant crops totaling more than $16 billion, the U.S. Department of Agriculture states.
