Several months of challenging weather affecting New Jersey nectarines

New Jersey’s nectarine deal has been a challenge this year due to unfavourable weather conditions. An early warm spring that transitioned into cold temperatures in April and May disrupted the budding-pollination process. “We had early budding due to the warm weather in March and then the cold weather halted pollination,” said Lauren Del Rosario of Frank Donio Inc. “The effect of that is inconsistent production this time of year as well as underperforming trees as a whole.” Fruit quality itself has been good. “The fruit that’s come through our facility has been sweet, brix has been good, and flesh has been nice. It’s just a lack thereof.”

Yields have been down, making it difficult for planning a spotty harvest, making supply tight. “Knowing what happened in March and then in April and May growers and shippers like us had a good idea this was expected so I believe that retailers have planned accordingly that there wasn’t going to be an abundance of available nectarines just because of the weather patterns that happened a few months back,” said Del Rosario. Prices are competitive right now; there is fruit available and everybody wants what’s coming.

Weather continues to be uncooperative for the state, which is about to encounter a heat wave that could affect retail ready fruit. “It’s safe to safe to say from our point of view we can’t commit to an outlook,” she said. “We can only hope for the best that weather will align and allow us to harvest the fruit that’s ready for retail shelves.”
