During the first five months of the year, the pineapple market acted according to the wishes of the importers. “There was not too much pressure on the market and that resulted in good prices. All importers were able to make money and that is also nice for a change,” observes Mario de Goede of Coolfresh International. By now the situation has changed and larger volumes are starting to enter the market. The price level has dropped to between 7.50 and 10 Euro, depending on size.
“Natural flowering has started now, and that is causing greater numbers and even stocks on the market. Natural flowering started late this year, and that is not very favourable for the market. Admittedly, the effects are not too big this year, but we are already receiving quite a volume of fruit from the Costa Rican region of Pital,” De Goede continues. “This unfortunately results in prices that lean towards, or even drop below, the breakeven point.”
