Belize banana exports rebound after 2022 floods

During the 2025 Budget Debate at Independence Hill in Belmopan, Jose Mai, Belize's Minister of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise, addressed the recovery of the banana sector after the late 2022 floods. Export earnings rose from $64 million in 2023 to $82.4 million in 2024, exceeding pre-flood levels.

Mai noted that this recovery results from coordinated financial initiatives, enhanced disease management strategies, and reinforced collaboration between Fyffes and the Banana Growers Association. He acknowledged Fyffes for confirming its commitment to Belize, stating, "Fyffes has reaffirmed their commitment to this country of ours," which has played a role in the sector's resurgence.
