Kenya's president unveils new potato cold storage facility in Meru County

President William Ruto has inaugurated a state-of-the-art potato cold storage facility in Meru County, Kenya. The move is aimed at reducing waste, improving product grading, and enhancing competitiveness both locally and globally.

The Ngusishi Cold Storage facility boasts an annual storage capacity of 2,000 metric tonnes of potatoes and is set to benefit around 14,000 farmers. Ruto emphasized that this initiative underscores the government's dedication to devising sustainable solutions for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the agri-sector, particularly in the pursuit of food security.

This facility forms part of a Sh300 million investment spanning Kisii and Nyandarua counties. The goal is to limit post-harvest losses, validate the economic feasibility of potato farming, and generate competitive, sustainable jobs along the supply chain. Collectively, these projects are expected to boost the earnings of small-scale farmers and rural entrepreneurs involved in potato and vegetable cultivation.

Joining the President at the event were Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Cabinet Secretary of the Ministry of Co-operatives and MSMEs Development Simon Chelugui, among others.
