Highs and lows for the exotic segment

The situation of the exotic segment differs depending on the product considered. Consumption was lively before Easter, and the trend seems to be similar now. There were a few quality problems for some products due to the weather, such as papayas from Brazil, but there was also a good market for others, such as limes from Brazil.

"A drastic drop in prices has been registered for mangoes from Brazil shipped by sea, partly due to the volumes available. The trend was slowed down also by the availability of other seasonal products. Quotations are instead high for the produce shipped by air - shipments from the Ivory Coast have started and those form Peru are coming to an end. Prices remain high, just like they were two-three weeks ago, due to the high fixed costs," reports Giorgio Donnarumma, sales manager from Nuovafrutta.

The avocado market has been rather regular. "Prices and demand are stable, without peaks. Consumption is good, also because clients and consumers know the product better. Volumes are increasing as the season of the Hass variety from Israel and Morocco is coming to an end and that from Peru is starting. Quality of the produce from Peru was not excellent at first, but it is now improving."

"As for green avocadoes, the situation is stable: the Peruvian campaign started a month ago, earlier than the usual mid-May, and the first volumes from South Africa are about to arrive."

The Brazilian lime market is extremely good: "Until a couple of weeks ago, prices reached €10 and now they continue to hover around €9, which is rather high."

The quality of Brazilian papayas is in contrast, not so good. "It depends on the rain, unfortunately. It is not necessarily the best period for this product but, if you are lucky enough to have good quality, sales are profitable."
