Matthijs Verburg, FME:

"Wild button mushrooms fit in well with growing mushroom demand"

Fresh Mushroom Europe (FME) has a new addition to its range - wild button mushrooms grown in the Marl caves near Paris, France. With these, this Belgian company wants to return to mushrooms' roots. "Mushrooms originated in Paris," says Matthijs Verburg of FME. "People are beginning to enjoy the basics of cooking again. And with these French cave mushrooms grown on marl, consumers can choose something original that tastes good too."

Matthijs describes these mushrooms as having a much firmer texture and stronger flavor. "They grow a little slower than regular chestnut mushrooms, which gives these buttons mushrooms a very distinctive flavor. It comes out well and can add that something extra to a dish. With the growing demand for healthy products, mushrooms are becoming increasingly popular."

"This new variety fits in well with that demand." FME offers these mushrooms fresh, year-round. The company is always looking for novelties. "We want to keep surprising customers and always be able to deliver great products. I think this is a good example of that."

FME will sell most of these mushrooms in the foodservice sector. "It's a good hospitality product; chefs love its authenticity and distinct flavor," concludes Matthijs. These French cave mushrooms have now found their way to various FME customers throughout Europe.
