Vietnam: Dragon fruit prices dropping off

On March 1, many fruit traders in Binh Thuan Province said that the price of dragon fruits was only at VND500-VND1,000 per kg on average. The best dragon fruits -for export- only fetched VND1,500 per kg.

With relatively high investment costs, dragon fruit growers in Binh Thuan can only break even if they can sell off-season dragon fruits for about VND10,000 per kg. With the current selling price at only VND500-VND1,500 per kg, farmers suffer heavy losses.

According to the Dragon Fruit Association of Binh Thuan Province, the price of dragon fruits has dropped sharply because the export of dragon fruits by road at the Northern border gate is currently congested. Meanwhile, exporting by sea is infeasible due to the scarcity of containers, as well as high transportation costs.

This fact not only makes dragon fruit growers face difficulties but many dragon fruit exporting enterprises in Binh Thuan are also struggling.
