Grocery sales fell 2.2% in France last year, Kantar data shows
Sales in the French grocery market fell 2.2% in value terms and 3.6% in volume terms last year, compared to an 'atypical' 2020, new data from Kantar has shown. The data indicates that price inflation did not make much of an impact over the course of 2021, with prices actually falling overall over the course of the year (by 0.5%), and consumers "willing to pay more for premium products", according to Gaëlle Le Floch, marketing director at Kantar Worldpanel France.

Finland: Kesko Group sees sales rise 7.7% in January
Retail conglomerate Kesko reported sales growth of 7.7% in January, to €823.4mln, compared with the same period in 2021. The group witnessed strong performance in the grocery trade unit as well as the construction and building services trade. In the grocery trade segment, sales in January amounted to €430.7mln, registering an increase of 3.4%.

‘Germany Europe’s ecommerce leader in 2025’
Last year, Germany, the UK, France and Italy generated 60% of the total European ecommerce revenue. The UK is currently the leader in ecommerce in Europe, even after Brexit. However, Germany is expected to take over that place by 2025. European ecommerce has grown steadily over the past years, especially since the outbreak of the coronavirus. According to recent figures released by Statista, online sales are contributing an increasing share of total retail sales in the European continent. In 2021, this share came to 19%in Central and Western Europe. This is a rise of 6% when compared to 2019, before the pandemic.

Following the announcement of their international commercial agreement, Everli and Carrefour are launching their partnership in 10 cities in France. After extending its international commercial agreement with Everli, Europe’s leading e-grocery marketplace, to France, Carrefour made its hypermarkets and supermarkets available on the platform in 10 cities: Lille, Lyon, Nice, Toulouse, Bordeaux, Montpellier, Nantes, Grenoble, Rennes, Paris and their surrounding suburbs.

Australia: An alternative way to shop for fresh produce
Unlike the supermarkets in recent times, there are no bare shelves at a Box Divvy hub. The community-owned social enterprise offers an alternative way for people to buy quality fresh produce at affordable prices, direct from the farmer or wholesaler. Box Divvy has more than 100 hubs across NSW, with local hubs in Cessnock including Abernethy, Wollombi, Greta and Kurri Kurri. Customers can place their order online via the Box Divvy app, and have the option to split a box with another household. The produce is picked to order and delivered to the hub for contact-free pick-up, with some hubs also offering home delivery.

U.S. online grocery sales moderate in January
Despite growth in pickup service, online grocery sales declined 4.5% in January versus a month ago, the latest Brick Meets Click/Mercatus Grocery Shopping Survey found. The U.S. online grocery market totaled sales of $8.5bln last month, compared with $8.9bln in December and down 8.6% from $9.3bln in January 2021, strategic advisory firm Brick Meets Click reported. The number of U.S. households that purchased groceries online during January 2022 held relatively steady at 69mln, just under December’s total and decreasing 1% from 69.7mln in January 2021.

US: Walmart, H-E-B stand out in retail customer loyalty
Walmart led all retailers by far in customer loyalty to close out 2021, despite strong showing by other big-box operators and supermarket chains, according to consumer intelligence and marketing specialist InMarket. For the 4th quarter, Walmart garnered a shopper loyalty score of 5.68, well ahead of its closest big-box competitor Meijer at 3.58 and above supermarket loyalty leader H-E-B at 4.63, Austin, Texas-based InMarket said in its Insights Q4 2021 Consumer Loyalty Report.

A San Francisco-based online grocer is establishing a presence in a major Midwest metro area.
