Tjerk Nagel, Konaxx Onions, the Netherlands:

"This season showed, once again, how elusive the onion market is, and will remain"

The season is over at Konaxx Onions in the Netherlands. "We're sending out the last onions this week. It is, after all, almost July already," begins Tjerk Nagel.

"To summarize, it's apparent that the onion market is, and remains, elusive. Export figures skyrocketed. But both traders and growers lost a lot of money. You simply can't control, manipulate, or influence the onion market. Not even with an agricultural slant on social media. This season has proven that again."

Meanwhile, the first onion sets are being harvested in the south again. So, the gap won't last long. "The cold spring caused a false start. Despite that, nature has again shown its great corrective capacity," continues Tjerk. "Although, the onions seem moderate across the board. There are vast differences too."

"It's a new round with new opportunities. But there's much uncertainty on the market. What's COVID-19 doing? How many onions will Africa take? How many containers are available? This season has taught growers and traders to be cautious. It's difficult to discern the onion market. They remain onions," concludes Tjerk.
