During the coming weeks Seminis, (Bayer’s Vegetable Seed division) is organizing individual and personalized webinars with the watermelon industry.
The objective is to create more awareness about the Global Seminis year-round Water melon portfolio offering, best in class taste profiles, firmness, shelf life and sustainability (resistance packages) of Seminis kicked off last week to organize digital meetings with the main EU traders and retailers. They were able to share and discuss the main market challenges especially the ones relating to year-round consistency in supply on important criteria such as uniformity, appearance, shelf life and taste.
For example, the Seminis melon team shared the alignment and the differences between the American and Moroccan Portfolio and the European consumer needs.
The added value of dual-purpose varieties like Shoreline were pointed out as these kinds of varieties can reduce the risk of oversupply or shortages due to the fact that business partners can decide at the last moment if they will use the watermelon for retail or for fresh-cut convenience.
The feedback from the participants was great, during the coming weeks we will continue to organize these webinars with our value chain partners. We appreciated the comment of one of the participants Mr Frank Ocampo, VP Sourcing The Greenery/Hage International :
Frank: “The approach of the Global melon team of Bayer is a great
example how to connect all disciplines in the melon value chain with each other to satisfy the end consumer”
This was just the 3rd theme in our series of digital melon meetings, after Galia and Cantaloupe, that will be continued for other types such as Yellow honeydew, Orange Candy and others.
