"Demand for tangerines grows as fruit juices become more popular"

The Chinese market offers an increasing variety and a growing volume of oranges and tangerines as more and more countries obtain permission to export citrus fruit to China. Imported tangerines sell well. Andy, a spokesperson for Shanghai E-Fresh recently talked about current conditions in production areas and the import market.

"Oranges and tangerines from the USA and Egypt recently entered the Chinese market, as did some of the domestic orange and tangerine varieties. Domestic market demand is nearly saturated. The import volume of Spanish oranges and tangerines is small this year because weather conditions reduced the production volume and the pandemic made distribution more complicated. Last year was the first time that Chile exported oranges and tangerines to China, but the supply volume was also small because of the pandemic. This year the supply volume of Chilean oranges and tangerines is expected to grow a lot."

At the moment, Shanghai E-Fresh primarily sells US tangerines and Egyptian oranges. According to Andy: "Up until this week the import volume of US tangerines was smaller than in the same period last year. Market demand exceeded supply, and that is why the price was relatively high. Only when late-season Navel oranges entered the market and the overall supply volume increased did the price slightly fall. The import volume of US tangerines is now regular."

"The product quality of Egyptian oranges was stable this season, but the CIF price of Egyptian oranges has rapidly increased in the last few weeks. Only in the last two weeks did the price come down. The price of Egyptian oranges is now stable. In April the supply volume will reach a peak. Now that the weather is growing warmer, there will be more consumer demand for fruit juices."

"It is still quite early in the domestic tangerine production season. The large volume of imported tangerines competes with late-season Navel oranges." According to Andy: "Imported oranges and tangerines only have market potential if they stand out in terms of product variety and flavor. And the brand names of imported oranges and tangerines helps as well. Some South African tangerine brands are very well known in the Chinese market. And the Australian 2PH brand is well established as a high-end market brand. They have a relatively strong competitive market position."

Shanghai E-Fresh was established in 2019. The company mainly deals in wholesale and retail of imported fruit. The headquarters are located in Shanghai, but the company has branch offices in Beijing, Nanjing, Zhengzhou, and Jiaxing as well. They sell fruit in wholesale markets and via e-commerce platforms throughout China. "I think brand names bring a lot of added value to fruit products. We hope to use the advantages of our sales channels to establish strong brand names. We want to stimulate standardization and brand-making in the Chinese fruit industry to bring more top-quality fruits to Chinese consumers across the country."
