Mathieu Sanchez, Top’Pom:

“Steady potato prices for the higher quality”

“It is not a very dynamic period on the potato market,” explains Mathieu Sanchez of Top’Pom. “Generally speaking, the fresh market remains calm, with a few peaks and some more dynamic weeks. The quality requirements of the packers are still high with few outlets for the intermediate batches. Prices are steady for the increasingly rare higher quality.”

Top’Pom has little perspective on the processing market, but Mathieu explains that because of the sanitary crisis, there is limited demand and very few outlets. “This factor influences the fresh market indirectly.”

According to Mathieu, the export markets are rather calm as well, but the demand is steady for the very high quality for France, Spain and Italy. “Varieties other than Agata of very good quality are popular and price levels remain good. Portugal is also present on the intermediate batches to a lesser extent. Eastern countries are still absent. They are thinking of buying from March on.”

Germination
Mathieu adds that the issue of germination management has been an important factor for a few weeks. “Some batches have suffered burns due to the different anti-germination treatments, at different scales. This observation is confirmed by certain clients, and those burns which aggravate the lenticels can penalize a batch if the affected areas are not well identified.”

Top’Pom currently offers varieties such as Agata, Caesar, Orchestra, Liberta, Monalisa and Taisiya for the polyvalent, as well as Gourmandine and some Franceline for the firm flesh. “The quality for these varieties is heterogeneous, but good overall.”
