According to the president of the Association of Producers of Hass Avocado of Peru (Prohass), Daniel Bustamante Canny, even though Peru's avocado industry has experienced notable development, it will continue to grow. In the 2021 season, Peruvian Hass avocado exports could increase by 10% in volume over the 360,000 tons shipped this year, he said.
However, Bustamante said, achieving this increase will only be possible if the sector control's some variables that affect it, such as the oversupply of fruit, the concentration of high export volumes in a few weeks, and shipments of inadequate fruit that don't comply with the percentages of dry matter required by the markets and negatively affects the image of a couple of companies, and the Peruvian avocado in general. The Peruvian avocado industry must maintain a high awareness of quality to maintain its good image in international markets, he stressed.
Another challenge for Peru, he said, is the international oversupply from other markets such as South Africa, Mexico, the United States, and Colombia, a country that is beginning to have more volumes. The stiff international competition puts more pressure on exporters than the pandemic. "However, a better internal ordering of the avocado supply can help reduce the impact on the markets," he said.
According to Bustamante, the international markets have stopped thinking about the avocado as an exotic product and have started to consider it an essential part of a balanced and healthy diet. "This is very important. Producers must be responsible for sending their product in the best condition."
