43% increase in the export of Greek summer fruits in August 2020

"In the middle of August, which is traditionally the European holiday month, there has been a 43% increase in the flow of exports of all summer fruits compared to the corresponding period of 2019. This confirms the prediction that due to the pandemic, the consumers-customers who remained in their countries have increased their household consumption."

The above has been published in the latest weekly bulletin on fresh fruit and vegetable exports from the Association of Greek Fruit and Vegetable Exporters (Incofruit - Hellas), which also offers the following details:

Cherry exports have been skyrocketing and again achieving an all-time record, with +47.1% compared to last year and amounting to 38,927 tons, compared to 26,467 tons last year, and with higher prices.

Peach exports again yield positive results and record +3.3% growth compared to last year.

Nectarine exports have fallen, but the fruit is also in demand and the decline is due to harvest delays.

Apricot exports are down by -7.7%, to 20,542, compared to 22,245 tons last year. This is due to a reduced production.

Meanwhile, watermelons exports have increased by 15.2%, to 197,332 tons, compared to 171,360 tons in the corresponding period last year.

Based on these data, the prospect is that there will be an increase in the Greek export of summer fruits, but the sector remains concerned regarding the sale of the products, given the reduction of domestic consumption due to the absence of tourists.

According to the data from the Documentation and Statistics Directorate of the Greek Ministry of Rural Development and Food, fresh fruit and vegetable exports in the week between August 8 and 14, 2020 yielded the following results:

-Oranges: 322,631 tons, compared to last year's 289,997 tons.

-Lemons: 13,943 tons, compared to last year 11,195 tons.

-Peaches: 85,945 tons, compared to last year's 83,177 tons.

-Watermelons: 197,332 tons, compared to last year's 171,360 tons.
