The Egyptian garlic market is still going strong. As Brazil opened its country to the Egyptian produce last year, this is the first season Egyptian exporters can use the market to its full potential. Demand is higher than ever before, also from other regions.
According to Mai Yassin, sales manager for Egyptian fresh produce exporter Stars of Export, the garlic season is going as well as it can under the current circumstances. “We’re not expecting any drop in volumes exporter, the numbers should be similar to last year. Fresh green garlic is finishing right now, with 70% dry garlic still being exporter. From the 1st of May the 100% dry garlic will start.”
Yassin states that the Egyptian garlic exporters have been seeing better opportunities for their business year after year. “It was near the end of last season that Brazil opened its doors for the Egyptian garlic. It means this is the first season we’ve been able to take full advantage of the new opportunity. Demand is very high overall though, not just in Brazil. We see a spike in demand from the United States, Canada and South Africa. Five years ago, we couldn’t imagine the level of demand that we’re seeing right now.”
In terms of logistics, the Egyptians are still able to meet demand. “We don’t have issues shipping our produce to any country. Prices are similar to last season. The issue we're dealing with is that work at the ports is going slower. Therefor it might take double the time before the vessel leaves the port, as ships have to be cleaned thoroughly and everything has to be double-checked. However it is no problem to get the produce to where it needs to be.” Yassin concludes.
