Gerard Hoekman, Mulder Onions:

"Too many onions were purchased in a rising market"

The sky-high demand for Dutch onions that existed  a few weeks ago has largely disappeared now. "Far too many onions have been purchased in a rising market and we are now paying for it. Purchase prices have dropped again to a level around 22 cents," says Gerard Hoekman of Mulder Onions.

"Some onions are going everywhere, but much less than desired. I expect demand will remain in the coming weeks, but first the purchased stock will have to dry up. Then you will see that people are much more careful about importing large volumes," the exporter notes. Qualitatively, he sees no major problems. "You can not send everything to far destinations anymore, then you will run into problems quickly. Within Europe that is still going well."

The sales of the New Zealand onions are also not yet really fast. "But we expected that. Only now we see more demand from markets such as France and Spain than large buyers, like Germany," concludes Gerard.
