Last year, onion production in the Netherlands, one of the world's major onion producing regions, was greatly reduced due to extreme weather, resulting in the world onion market structure shifting dramatically. As a result, many countries turned their attention to other onion producing countries to meet their market demand. China was one of these countries. Many companies were satisfied with the good quality of Chinese onions, and the number of orders kept increasing, which benefited many Chinese companies. Therefore, Chinese companies hope to supply more export markets this year.
“The current market performance of onions is better than in the same period last year, and the total stock volume is nearly 60,000 tons less than last year. Last year, onion stocks in Jinxiang County were stored in 680 warehouses, while this year they are only stored in 590 warehouses,” said Mr. Cuncai Xue of Cuncai Farming and Trading Co., Ltd. based in Jinxiang County.

“The main reason for the drop in onion production is that onion growers and traders have been unable to make profits in the past three years, especially in 2018, where the costs of onion stocks couldn’t even be covered, and large-scale land contractors also suffered significant losses. We mainly focus on processing and exporting onions. Our factory is currently processing yellow skinned onions from Huludao, Liaoning Province. This year, the quality of the onions is very good, mainly thanks to standardized management and more advanced planting techniques."
