New data from British Apple & Pear growers shows strong support for domestic apples among several UK supermarkets in October 2025, with clear differences between retailers in both total volume sold and their share of British apples relative to grocery market share.
Aldi topped the list with the highest volume, purchasing more than 2,600 tonnes of British apples during the month. Lidl followed with just over 2,300 tonnes, and Tesco secured the third position with around 1,900 tonnes. Sainsbury's and Asda completed the top five.
Aldi and Lidl stand out, selling a higher proportion of British apples than their overall market share would suggest. Both discounters continue to outperform in domestic apple sourcing, supporting a larger share of British growers' output than their position in the wider grocery market.
Tesco, the UK's largest retailer by market share, sold a lower proportion of British apples relative to its overall presence. Sainsbury's and Asda performed closer to expected levels, while Morrisons' British apple share also tracked below its grocery market share.
Premium retailers M&S and Waitrose sold moderate volumes, though both remain below their comparative grocery market shares in terms of British apple sourcing. Online retailer Ocado and smaller outlets in the "Others" category accounted for only minor shares, with Iceland recording minimal volumes.
Growers note that the comparison between sourcing share and overall market share provides an increasingly important picture of retailer support for British produce. While some supermarkets are closely aligned with expectations, others show a wide gap between their market footprint and their contribution to domestic apple sales.
British Apple & Pear growers will continue monitoring monthly sales trends as the 2025 season progresses.
