As the weather cools off in British Columbia, one importer is getting ready for the upcoming vegetable season out of Mexico. "We're in a transition season right now and the season from Mexico that will start in about two weeks," says Kirk Coolen of City Wide Produce, who adds that it brings in a variety of products from the country including new crop zucchini, bell peppers, tomatoes, long English cucumbers, eggplants and also watermelons.
While Mexico will begin harvesting late this month, volumes from there typically peak in January and February when growers are fully ramped up. City Wide will be bringing in product via Nogales, AZ and Coolen says the transition to product from Mexico is happening at the same time as has been historically seen.

Demand to strengthen too
"We're also looking forward to demand picking up this season," Coolen says, adding that last year it imported product from Mexico until June 15th.
What is on watch for the company is the hurricane season in Mexico following recent storms that made their way through the country. "We're watching things down there because hurricanes bring rain but also wind so we're watching flowering for zucchinis for example," he says.
This is also the time when the company will return to the Global Produce & Floral Show this week in Anaheim, California where Coolen and company co-founder Gopal Gupta will be walking the show. "It's a show where we're looking for new relationships with potential vendors," says Coolen.
