Pakistani mangoes dominate UAE summer market

Mangoes, known for their distinct taste, are a staple in the UAE during the summer. Among the many varieties available, those originating from Pakistan remain highly preferred. The farming of Pakistani mangoes, which are primarily cultivated in the Sindh and Punjab provinces, promotes their popularity. Sindh's climate allows for earlier harvests, contributing to the initial seasonal supply. Punjab's varieties reach the market from July through August.

Each region in Pakistan offers unique mango types. Sindh produces varieties like Sindhri, while Punjab is known for Anwar Ratol, amidst over 100 varieties including Langra, Dussehri, and Fajri. These mangoes are often exported in various packaging sizes ranging from 5 kg to 10 kg.

The UAE's notable demand for Pakistani mangoes is partly driven by the substantial Pakistani and South Asian communities. This demographic influence results in large imports, making the UAE a key destination for Pakistani mangoes. The favored varieties, namely Sindhri, Chaunsa, and Anwar Ratol, enhance the fruit's local demand. Additionally, Pakistan maintains a strict export quality standard, ensuring premium products reach overseas markets.

Proximity to Pakistan facilitates efficient shipments to the UAE, ensuring freshness. Beyond the UAE, Pakistani mangoes reach markets in the United Kingdom, Canada, Kazakhstan, Oman, Qatar, and Germany. According to reports from the Pakistan Fruit and Vegetable Exporters Association (PFVA), efforts are ongoing to penetrate non-traditional markets such as Japan, South Korea, Australia, and the US.

Mangoes also find versatility through by-products such as jams, pickles, jellies, and concentrates, augmenting economic value. In the UAE, there is a variety of mango-based culinary offerings like ice cream, milkshakes, and puddings.

Pakistani mangoes are accessible in various retail formats throughout the UAE, from supermarkets to smaller fruit stands. Budget-conscious consumers can explore options at places like the Dubai Central Fruit and Vegetable Market for economical bulk purchasing. Pakistani supermarkets diversify the fruit's availability alongside other culinary goods.
