Almaverde Bio:

Good sales for organic cherries

"Organic cherries are experiencing the same conditions as traditional ones, and a few more problems. But we are not complaining and sales are going well," reports Paolo Pari, marketing director of Canova, holder of the Almaverde Bio brand, which is known throughout Europe for the cultivation and distribution of organic fruit and vegetables.

"Produce is coming in from our members in Emilia Romagna at the moment. Quantities are lower than average, but they are, in any case, satisfactory. However, there have been shortages affecting producers in Apulia due to the weather. The quality of the cherries that are currently on sale is good, although we have to pay particular attention to fruit shelf life."

It was the very rainy month of May that caused problems, which are exacerbated in organic production as there are fewer possibilities for defence and/or products are less incisive.

"Prices are high, following the trend of the traditional product. Cherries are scarce, demand is still high, and prices are rising. We offer 300-gram punnets, which is the most popular format because it enables people to still buy cherries, yet at a not-too-high checkout price."

"Most of our organic cherries are destined for the domestic market, the Almaverde Islands in supermarkets or specialised shops. However, we also export to certain chains in the north, though in this case we ship the batches that guarantee better hold, considering that the logistical times are a day or two longer than for the domestic market."
