The expanding health awareness among Indian consumers coupled with global culinary influences is encouraging interest in international produce, including avocados, as reported by John Tyas, CEO of Avocados Australia. This organization seeks to promote Australian avocados in key international territories.
Tyas emphasized India's potential, saying, "India is an exciting and high-potential market for Australian avocados." He further noted the importance of sustained educational initiatives, retail alliances, and supply chain development for ongoing market expansion. "We are looking forward to collaborating with industry partners to drive long-term success in India," he told The Hindu.
The initial year of market entry saw Australia exporting 567 tonnes to India. While volume remains important, Tyas expressed a keener interest in pursuing long-term development. "The Indian avocado market is very much in its infancy. It will take time to grow the market, and we need to be patient," he affirmed.
The CEO outlined strategies targeting premium market sectors with emphasis on renowned fruit quality. With aspirations to integrate avocados into Indian diets beyond Western consumption styles, the CEO remarked, "We aim to integrate avocados into Indian eating habits beyond just Western-style consumption."
He discussed value-focused objectives, highlighting collaborative efforts in food service to facilitate broader avocado inclusion into popular menus. Given avocados' highly perishable nature, careful supply chain handling is paramount for sustained freshness during exports to India.
