Avocado and orange prices rise while cherries and mangos drop amid strong produce ads

New Year's resolutions for healthy eating were easy for shoppers to keep this week, as retailers offered an abundance of nutritious produce. Cherries from Chile, Florida strawberries, and Texas grapefruit were just a few of the wholesome, new crop options seen this week. Bowl games were also a major focus.

Guacamole ingredients like avocados and cilantro were popular, as were snack tray favorites like baby carrots, berries, grapes, and broccoli. Winter citrus season continued to ramp up with Cara Cara navels, blood oranges, and pummelos featured alongside standard citrus offerings.

Total ad numbers this week were 289,415. The total for the same week last year was 7% higher at 312,265. The total number of ads broken out by commodity groups: fruit 156,735 (54%), onions and potatoes 18,954 (7%), vegetables 110,526 (38%), herbs 1,728, ornamentals 922, and hemp 2,278. The number of ads for organic produce was 53,647, 19% of total ads.

The following are the prices of major advertised items (3,000 plus ads) this week, compared to the same week last year. Significant increases in price for fruit this week included avocados at 27%, Navel oranges (per lb.) at 25%, red seedless grapes at 18%, apple juice (64 oz.) at 17%, and Gala apples (per lb.) at 12%. Significant decreases included round mangos at 29%, Navel oranges (4 lb. bag) at 14%, blueberries (1 pint) at 14%, red cherries at 12%, and blackberries (5.66 oz. packages) at 10%. There were no significant changes in price for onions and potatoes this week. There were no significant changes in the price of vegetables this week.
