Garlic production is rising in Kashmir

In Kashmir, there has been a notable increase in garlic production this season, with an additional 2,500 tons bringing the total expected production to 70,000 tons. Garlic, considered a cash crop and a key ingredient in Kashmiri cuisine, is celebrated for its unique flavor and health benefits. Local farmers and traders have observed the multifaceted advantages of garlic, including its role in managing blood pressure and cholesterol levels, and its use as a culinary ingredient.

Javaid Ahmad, a farmer from Pulwama, highlighted garlic's significance beyond its culinary uses, mentioning its health benefits and its use in homemade remedies. Bilal Ahmad Dar, a garlic trader, discussed the potential for garlic production to reach the significance of apple cultivation in Kashmir, emphasizing the importance of processing techniques to improve market value. He noted the current practice of selling unprocessed garlic results in lower profits for farmers.

Dr. Aejaz Malla, reflecting on the evolution of garlic cultivation in Kashmir, mentioned the introduction of Chinese garlic seeds has elevated the quality and shelf life of Kashmiri garlic, making it a globally recognized product. He stressed the need for farmers to process garlic to achieve better prices.
