Better outlook for the Senegalese organic mango campaign

Senegalese mango exporters are gearing up for the start of the season at the end of April. According to Bassirou Ba, general manager of Sunu Mango, "conditions for the Senegalese mango campaign have improved this year, especially with regard to the country's security situation, breaking with the difficulties of the last two seasons."

The exporter adds, "We're expecting an earlier start to the season than usual, due to a warmer climate. We're preparing on the technical aspects of harvesting, and also on the commercial level by closing the first contracts of the campaign."

The Senegalese mango industry has had to contend with a number of problems in recent seasons: weather conditions impacting volumes and quality, and political tensions disrupting the supply chain. Bassirou Ba is confident of a successful campaign this year: "We got through the political crisis thanks to the last presidential elections. As for quality concerns, Bassirou says, "I'm aware of the quality concerns over the last few seasons, but I don't share the same opinion. At Sunu Mango, we have exported mangoes of very good quality, without making any distinction between shipment by plane or by boat. We offer our customers good packaging. Our prices are not exaggerated. We strive to offer the best mangoes in Senegal, prioritizing customer loyalty and preserving the image of Senegalese origin."

The exporter continues, "More broadly speaking, we're seeing an improvement in production conditions this year at the national level. Senegalese mangoes are among the most prized in the world, thanks to their taste, color, and fiber consistency. Compared to organic mangoes and conventional mangoes from other countries in the region, and even in Latin America, they are simply not the same."

The initial demand, before the start of the campaign, comes in particular from Spain, says Bassirou."Part of our programs is reserved for the Canadian market, which we supply regularly. We are currently receiving requests from Spanish importers at this pre-campaign stage."

As for prices, there won't be much change from last season, concludes Bassirou, "At Sunu Mango, we'll be applying a slight 1% increase to match the rise in accessory costs such as packaging."
