Peru's Hass avocado harvest has begun with limited volumes, mainly due to the continuous effects of the El Niño phenomenon. “Despite this, this season will be better than last year,” stated Manuel Canales, CEO and owner of the exporting company Perú MCFruits.
"Last year some lots that did not have the correct dry matter content were shipped early in the season, which then affected the sales of later shipments. That's why we only started making shipments this week and we made sure the fruit is of the highest quality," he said.
In this campaign, the first shipments are being sent to Asian destinations, mainly China and Korea. "However, in the coming weeks we'll also export avocados to Europe, the United States, and Chile," he stated.
El Niño phenomenon has had a noticeable impact on the quality and size of the avocados, he added.
"The most abundant calibers this season are the 16 to 24 calibers. The largest calibers, i.e. from 12 to 14, are not as numerous as in previous campaigns. It continues to rain in some parts of Peru, which isn't good for the harvest and also has an impact on the fruit's shelf life," the CEO of Perú MCFruits stated.
The company is carefully evaluating international market prices to ensure competitiveness.
