Indian avocado importer launches ‘Mini Gems’ with single and duo packaging

Abacate, an avocado importer in India, has announced the expansion of its product range with the introduction of Abacate Mini Gems in new patent-pending punnet packaging for avocados. “Our new product line, Abacate Mini Gems complements the existing ‘Abacate Premium’ and ‘Abacate Gold’ product lines. Our carefully crafted punnet packaging, which is currently under process of The Designs Act 2000, which comes in packs of one and packs of two. With a specially engineered design, these punnets keep the fruit elevated, preventing contact with the ground. Enhanced airflow, a hallmark of our design, maintains optimal freshness within each punnet,” says Abdul Kadir Memon, Director of Abacate International.

“Traditionally, avocados arrive in 4kg boxes, making their way to retailers. From there, they found themselves either sold individually or by weight But now, we present a new way of connecting with avocados, a transformation brought by our new packaging. Our punnet packaging offers a personalized, user-friendly approach, perfectly sized for a single avocado or a dynamic duo. We expect it to be a hit on the consumer market in India.”

Memon states that India's appetite for avocados has ignited an impressive growth over the past few years. “From 2021 to 2023, the avocado market has undergone an astounding transformation, with import statistics painting a picture of a soaring demand that has more than doubled within this short timeframe. Between January and July of 2021, the avocado imports laid the foundation by witnessing a doubling of quantities. Fast forward to the same period in 2022, and the market exceeded all expectations by doubling again from the previous year. This remarkable momentum did not waver; in fact, it gained even more momentum, with the avocado import quantities in the first seven months of 2023 doubling once more compared to the same timeframe in 2022.”

According to Memon, two key varieties shine in India’s avocado scene: “The highly favored Hass, imported for its renowned creamy texture and flavor, and the Fuerte, locally grown and cherished for its distinct taste. While Hass takes the lead in popularity, being primarily imported, the locally cultivated Fuerte variety caters to local tastes as Indian avocados. Some regions have now ventured into growing Hass avocados in India. Production is gearing up, full-scale availability is a few years away.”

Shahid Patka, Director of Abacate International, states the single-serving avocados are designed with the tagline ‘One Perfect Portion’: “These single-serving avocados provide convenience and freshness in every bite. Their smaller size ensures minimal wastage, making them an ideal choice for health-conscious individuals seeking a satisfying, on-the-go snack. We're also working on introducing ripening chambers that will enable us to supply ripe and ready-to-eat avocados to major Tier 1 cities across India.”

This year, avocado prices hit an all-time low, Memon says. “The drastic price drop brought challenges for importers, yet it opened doors for a broader consumer base to access this remarkable fruit, benefiting the industry as a whole. The limited availability of the fruit, which is likely to contribute to a positive uptrend in prices moving forward. As importers, we are proud to play a pivotal role facilitating the avocado revolution in India.” Memon concludes.
