Jamie Craig - Dori Australia

"Our harvest window opens in late March and as such gives us a quite significant break on the Zespri Sun Gold variety"

The Italian Gold variety “Dori” came to Australia 3 years ago and is in the establishment phase in Australia. Production is still modest at 150 tons this year and anticipating 300 tons next season. Volumes will continue to rise quite rapidly over the next few years as plantings already exceed 100ha.

Dori Australia represents several Australian growers of gold kiwifruit.

"Our harvest window opens in late March and as such gives us a quite significant break on the Zespri Sun Gold variety. In addition Dori colours very strongly in our environment and the the eating experience is absolutely exceptional," said Jamie Craig, Director of Dori Australia.

"We have three orchards in production and another five where plants are at various stages and will commence to produce in the next couple of years. We are anticipating at least a doubling in production next year from this years 150 tonnes."

Dori Australia are targeting production at the domestic market initially but export will be an increasingly important outlet as production ramps up. The proximity of Western Australia to the significant Asian Markets of Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia is seen as an important advantage. For example transit by sea Perth to Jakarta is only 4 or 5 days.

"The vine has proved very well adapted to the very high sunshine hours we enjoy in the growing regions. The fruit matures readily with a very attractive deep golden yellow flesh colour and due to the very high dry matter we can achieve the eating experience is quite exceptional. The vine is proving very productive and responds readily to normal care and attention in the orchard."
