Lidl opened its newly extended Mullingar Regional Distribution Centre following an €80mln investment, creating 100 new permanent jobs. The facility is now one of the largest distribution centres on the island of Ireland and one of the Lidl Group’s largest in the world.

France: Casino and Teract expand tie up talks to Intermarché owner
Debt-laden supermarket chain Casino and smaller food retailer Teract said that Groupement Les Mousquetaires, owner of supermarket chain Intermarché, had joined their exclusive tie-up talks. Under the planned deal, Groupement Les Mousquetaires and Casino are considering extending their purchasing alliances by two years until 2028. They are also considering extending their agreements to the new entity to be formed between Casino Group and Teract, which would be controlled by Casino.

New stores boost sales in Despar Italia in FY 2022
SPAR concessionaire Despar Italia closed 2022 with €4.14bln in sales (up 3.4% on 2021), of which 65% was generated by directly-owned stores and 35% by affiliated (+10.5%). In terms of store banners, 38% of revenue was generated by EUROSPAR, medium-sized supermarkets ranging between 800-2,000 square metres; 35% by Despar, neighbourhood supermarkets of up to 800 square metres; and 27% by INTERSPAR, large supermarkets spanning more than 2,000 square metres.

Calgary Co-op reported earnings of $38mln in 2022, up from $30mln in 2021. The retail co-operative released its financial results, annual report and the results of its 2023 director election April 20 at its Annual General Meeting. Total sales amounted to $1.32bln, from $1.23bln in the year prior.

US: Maverik - Adventure’s First Stop to acquire Kum & Go and Solar Transport from Krause Group
Maverik - Adventure’s First Stop, together with its parent company, FJ Management, announced the acquisition of Kum & Go, a family-owned convenience store chain with over 400 locations across 13 states, from Krause Group. US: Thrive Market uses less selection, larger orders to fight grocery inflation
Thrive Market, an online, subscription-based marketplace for organic groceries, aims to offer healthy groceries for less. Nick Green, Thrive Market co-founder and CEO, told Yahoo Finance offering less selection on its website helps keep prices low. "Instead of going into a grocery store and having 40,000 non-perishable SKUs [stock keeping units], we've got about 5,000 or 6,000, which gives us more purchasing power...despite the inflation, we've been able to be pretty resilient in keeping our prices low, certainly relative to competitors," Green told Yahoo Finance Live.
