US: Costco Q1 profits inch up on 8.1% sales gain
Costco Wholesale Corp. said its profits for the fiscal first quarter edged up slightly, to nearly $1.4bln, on sales gains of 8.1%, to $53.4bln, compared with the first quarter of a year ago. Companywide comparable-store sales were up 7.1% in the 12-week period, which ended November 20, after adjusting for changes in gas prices and foreign exchange. Comps in the U.S. rose 6.5% after the adjustments. Adjusted e-commerce sales were down 2% for the quarter. Total revenues for the quarter were $54.4bln, which included $1bln in membership fees.

Black Sheep Foods, a San Francisco–based food tech company that uses plants to create a similar flavor to animal meat, secured another funding round, this time $12.3mln in Series A capital. UK: Morrisons scraps date labels from 200 fresh produce items
Morrisons is scrapping date labels and removing ‘Display Until’ messaging on nearly 200 of its fresh fruit, vegetable and salad items in a bid to prevent food waste and help customers save money this Christmas. The move follows a survey by WRAP revealing that UK households waste 4.5mln tonnes of food, costing the average family £720 per year, with fresh potatoes and carrots cited to be some of the top wasted produce items. However, whilst some items will have their dates removed completely, such as bananas, watermelon and pineapple, most will be replaced by a code system, which will be used by Morrisons workers to ensure the same freshness on shelf.
