The asparagus harvest began in the Mexican state of Aguascalientes. Miguel Muñoz de la Torre, the Secretary of Rural and Agribusiness Development (SEDRAE), said they expected to harvest, up until mid-September, nearly 1,400 tons in the 180 hectares that are in production in the entity; thus, achieving an average yield of 8 tons per hectare.
The official said that, during its six-year period, the state administration has been giving this innovative crop a strong boost as part of the Productive Reconversion Program. There are already 35 asparagus producers in the state, mainly in the municipalities of Rincon de Romos, Pabellon de Arteaga, Tepezala, Jesus Maria, San Francisco de los Romos, and Asientos.
The Head of SEDRAE said that three marketers are in charge of marketing all of the producers' asparagus and that they mainly distribute it to the United States market.
Asparagus cultivation is also growing in Chihuahua
The cultivation of this vegetable has also begun to grow in the state of Chihuahua after producers started planting it last year in the towns of Delicias, Meoqui, and Jimenez.
The Sulken company introduced this crop to the entity. Last year, there were 120 hectares of asparagus. Another 220 have been added over the course of 2022, which means there are 300 hectares established in the region, stated Cesar Villagran.
Since it takes the plants about a year and a half to start producing asparagus, there has been no harvest yet, but there are good omens for the future because of the attractive prices offered in the international market, mainly in the United States, Canada, and Europe, where most of the production will be destined.
Another of the characteristics that make this crop so attractive, especially for regions suffering from hail, is that this weather phenomenon only affects the production the day it occurs because asparagus must be harvested twice a day. Likewise, the plant adapts to all types of weather and does not need much water, so the environment of Delicias and the region are suitable for its development.
