Peruvian vegetable exports decreased by 3% driven by the drop in asparagus shipments

Peruvian vegetable exports totaled 365 million dollars between January and May 2022, experiencing a 3% contraction over the same period of the previous year, according to information provided by FreshFruit.

Asparagus and artichoke accounted for 63% of vegetable exports, the report said.

So far this year, Peru has exported 46,570 tons of asparagus (-2%) for 131 million dollars (-7%). Artichoke exports stood at 13,420 tons (+35%) for 35 million (+43%). The increase in artichoke exports was positive but it wasn't enough to compensate for the fall in asparagus exports, which led to a contraction in the overall result.

Previous Years
According to data from a company specializing in commercial intelligence for the agro-export sector, up until 2016, vegetable exports grew, on average, by 7% each year, reaching a value of 839 million dollars.

The following two years, 2017 and 2018, were complicated in the domestic market because of El NiƱo phenomenon. As a result, vegetable exports decreased by 2% each year and stood at 798 million dollars.

Despite the negative results, Peruvian products recovered and, in 2019, resumed the path of growth, achieving shipments of USD 845 million (6% more than in the previous year).

Exports continued to increase over the next two years, despite the pandemic. Thus, exports increased by 7% on average during 2020 and 2021, achieving a record 973 million dollars last year.
