According to data from the Agrifood and Fisheries Information Service (SIAP), in 2020 Mexico produced 2,468,000 tons of bananas, which were planted on 81,081 hectares in 16 states of the country. Mexican banana trees have remarkable yields, as their productivity exceeds the world average, with more than 30 tons per hectare, the federal agency highlighted.
Bananas are the most exported fruit in the world and the third most-produced fruit in Mexico, a country that is the world's 12th biggest producer of bananas. The main producing entities are Tabasco, which accounts for 24% of the total volume, Chiapas (19.7%), and Veracruz (13.6%), which together account for more than 50% of the national production.
The federal agency said Mexico produced high-quality bananas that were appreciated worldwide, as the country exports nearly 600,000 tons of bananas each year to China, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, South Korea, Italy, Spain, Ukraine, and Romania, among other destinations.
The United States and Japan are the main destinations for the Mexican fruit and, according to the SIAP, had a significant increase in purchases, reaching more than 451,000 and 57,000 tons, respectively.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development also stated that the national production fully satisfies the national market's demand, estimated at 14.4 kilograms per capita per year.
