Chinese garlic export enters peak period before Spring Festival arrives

Export price of Chinese garlic is stabilizing, only in a few areas is the price still rising

Some overseas countries have adopted a series of quarantine measures ever since the outbreak of Covid-19 last year. These measures have an impact on the regular export of Chinese garlic. However, Chinese factories have already returned to business as usual, which gives them an advantage in the international garlic market.

The annual export volume of Chinese garlic was larger in 2020 than in the 12 years before. The overall export price of Chinese garlic stabilized in early 2021, but there are still some production areas where the price continues to rise. The export volume is in decline, but that is expected to change with the imminent arrival of Chinese Spring Festival [12 February, 2020]. Overseas buyers are expected to increase their order volumes in the period leading up to Spring Festival, which will stimulate the price of Chinese garlic.

The new garlic had only just begun to sprout when a cold wave hit in early January. The garlic in many production areas in Pizhou and Laiwu suffered from frostbite. This will certainly have an effect on the overall production volume of garlic this year. Industry specialists expect the overall production volume to decline this season. That should further push up the price of garlic from cold storage.

Chinese garlic is off-loaded in overseas market

"Many overseas buyers spent the first half of the season buying garlic and so they have quite a large volume in reserve. Furthermore, the shipping cost is going up fast. That is why overseas buyers are generally waiting to see how the market will develop. These two factors combined are the reason for a decline in the export volume of Chinese garlic. As for the price, although the export price of Chinese garlic continued to rise for a long period of time, the price is still low in comparison with the same period last year." This is according to Annie Chen, Sales Manager at Jining Fenduni Foodstuff Co., Ltd.

Garlic

Jining Fenduni Foodstuff mainly exports garlic to Africa, the Middle East, and South America. The company currently enjoys a small sales peak in the period leading up to Chinese Spring Festival [12 February, 2021]. Many overseas buyers have already begun to stock up in preparation for the holiday. When asked about the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on overseas markets, manager Annie Chen replied: "The main problem now is the shortage of shipping containers. This shortage has intensified competition in the market."
