Organic tomatoes currently have strong volumes and are hitting peak supply in the coming weeks.
“We continue to deepen and expand our supply and expect strong volume through Q1,” says Aaron Brookes, director of sales and marketing for Jacobs Farm del Cabo based in Pescadero, CA.
The grower produces its del Cabo brand tomatoes year-round and its organic offerings include its Sugar Plum grape tomatoes, Heirloom Medley cherry tomatoes and its specialty varieties including red and yellow pear tomatoes, Honey Bunch, Sweet 100s and more out of Baja California Sur and Sonora, Mexico. (Brookes notes the del Cabo grower collective runs the length of the Baja Peninsula, from Ensenada to San Jose del Cabo.)
Influencing consumer trends
To meet that supply, Brookes says demand is equally strong currently, especially in retail and home-delivery markets. “Consumer shopping trends amidst the pandemic have shifted to favor the most healthy and safe options in fresh produce, with organic category growth on the rise as well,” he says. He adds that the growth of online grocery shopping for home delivery has also helped movement stay consistent throughout the pandemic and anticipates consumption trends such as this one to continue well into the future.
