Growing conditions for potatoes in Luxemburg were not as bad as expected and yields for seed potatoes seem to be in line with previous years.
"The quality is good to very good across the 35 varieties cultivated by Synplants," explains Christian Horn Director at Synplant.
Synplants has a capacity of 16000 tons of seed potatoes on its Luxemburg cold storage and sorting site.
Synplants recently installed a new reception machine for potatoes delivered in bulk directly from the fields. "The line also sorts different calibers which are of interest for replanting in the following years (25-35 mm, 35-55 mm which are the most demanded calibers by consumption potato growers). The Bijlsma Hercules machine also fills 1250 kgs wooden pallet boxes at a speed of around 30 tons an hour.
"We chose Bijlsma Hercules because they have excellent machines and outstanding service; in a plug and play line. Mounting the delivered machine took only two hours.
"The new machine enables us to handle 60 tons of seeds in one shift with only 4 people. The harvesting season is very short so we wanted to reduce bottlenecks at the reception stage for our affiliates."
