"PENBOTEC® 400 SC provides excellent protection of treated fruit over long storage and transport periods"

Australian citrus and pome fruit growers to have access to new post-harvest fungicide this Spring

E.E Muir & Sons and Janssen PMP have announced the release of fungicide PENBOTEC® 400 SC which is registered for use on citrus and pome fruit.

Greg Smith, National Post Harvest/Specialty Products Manager, at E.E Muir & Sons says with an unparalleled range of post-harvest products servicing the national horticultural market in Australia, the EEM business is well placed to bring value to the industry courtesy of the solid partnership that exists with a key post-harvest fungicide manufacturer in Janssen PMP.

“I’m excited with the release of PENBOTEC® 400 SC (APVMA Approval Number: 88115/120323) as it contains the reduced risk active Pyrimethanil which is classified according to EPA criteria and offers both preventative and curative activity on key pathogens in citrus and pome fruit,” he said. “It’s a very effective weapon in the pack shed’s fungicide program.”

The product contains 400g/L Pyrimethanil formulated as a Suspension Concentrate (SC). The spectrum of Disease Activity is:

  • Citrus Post Harvest Storage Decays. Penicillium digitatum (Green Mould) and Penicillium italicum (Blue Mould).
  • Pome Fruit Post Harvest Storage Decays. Penicillium expansum (Blue Mould), Botrytis cinerea (Grey Mould), Phyctema vagabunda and Neofabraea malicorticus (Target Rot & Spot Disease).

Mr Smith adds PENBOTEC® 400 SC is a very effective and versatile product that can be applied through a variety of application methods.

“Citrus; Dip, Wash Tank, Drench and flooder applications as well as aqueous and wax line spray applications,” he said. “Pome fruit; Dip, Wash Tank and Drencher. Thorough coverage of the fruit surface is important to achieve sufficient distribution and level of residues for optimal product performance, especially for long term storage and extended shelf life in transport and retail.”

Efficacy of PENBOTEC® 400 SC is aided with the active ingredient Pyrimethanil which possesses strong curative activity and furthermore, it has a long-lasting residual activity. Treating fruit with PENBOTEC® 400 SC also offers treatment with an active ingredient which will hardly degrade over time. The result is an excellent protection of the treated fruit over long storage and transport periods, even preventing re-infections at handling after storage.

Mr Smith says the kickback activity of PENBOTEC® 400 SC provides some flexibility in the time between harvest and post-harvest application. Due to other products having less curative activity than PENBOTEC® 400 SC, there is a shorter window of application between harvest and first treatment.

“PENBOTEC® 400 SC is an excellent tool in a disease resistance management strategy program as it offers a different mode of action compared to other active constituents (Group 9 Fungicide),” according to Mr Smith. “It is advised to use the product in a sustainable way to preserve it for the long term which is a strategy that should be implemented with all post-harvest fungicide use.”

Pyrimethanil Maximum Residue Levels (MRLs) are widely established internationally, but users need to always consult the country of origin as to where the fruit is being sent at acceptable MRL levels.

PENBOTEC® 400 SC (1L) will be available to Citrus growers in late September 2020 and therefore, in readiness for the upcoming pome fruit season.
