Luc van den Aker, Fresh Mushroom Europe

“The corona crisis has little impact on Belgian mushroom supplies”

The Belgian mushroom sector is doing well. That is, after a few months of several challenges. The corona crisis caused these. "Sales to the retail sector have continued as normal in recent months, even better than before. The foodservice market is having a harder time. We hope it will keep recovering. That is once the European foodservice sector measures are gradually relaxed," says Luc van den Aker of Fresh Mushroom Europe.

Luc has experienced few problems with supplies and harvesting. This is despite the corona crisis. "We have been able to supply everything. But demand is still irregular, so we buy, partly, on-demand. In spite of the crisis, we have has no delivery issues. The harvesting of our own mushrooms is also going at full speed. The demand from retailers is good. That applies to beech mushrooms too, which are currently selling very well."

"It is now the Bulgarian morel season, and we got a nice volume. The quality is excellent, and prices are normal for this time of year. We have noticed morel sales increase annually due to its rising popularity. Besides these morels, I am expecting mini girolles from Turkey soon. We have already started with penny buns and St George's mushrooms. We hope all the markets will reopen soon. Then people will be able to enjoy a lot of these beautiful spring mushrooms again," concludes Luc.
