“The demand for onions and carrots has returned to normal. During the hoarding period we were very busy and everything trebled, then the market fell and everything is back to normal,” says Frans Cool of Paul Cool. “We shifted exports somewhat during the busy period, because it is uncertain how national demand was going to develop. Despite the fact that we trade in healthy products that everyone should continue to eat, we cannot currently sell our thick onions and carrots. We normally sell these sizes to the catering industry, but now that everything is closed we can no longer store them. The retailers are nevertheless buying a bit more, which means we can compensate for the loss of the catering industry. ”
Frans's greatest concern, however, is not how the carrots and onions market will develop, but about the measures taken by the government. “I understand why measures are being taken, but it is making it difficult for people who are still working. It is not always possible to take a meter and a half away during normal work, but the fines they impose on staff who carpool are absurd. It would be nice to meet the people who continue to work in one way or another so that they remain motivated. We ourselves are taking all measures necessary to remain operational and we try to use our common sense to keep the virus at bay. We hope it all passes soon,” Frans concludes.
