The Florida peach season kicked off a few weeks ago and the harvest is going strong. The Florida peach season traditionally starts as the Chilean peach program finishes up, running from late March through mid-May. The Florida peaches are the first domestic peaches available in the US each year, starting before the Georgia, South-Carolina and California producers begin their programs.
Volumes coming on quickly
Florida Classic Growers is in its 10th season marketing Florida peaches. Of the ongoing season, Al Finch says: “Florida has been experiencing some above-average temperatures and the peaches are coming on quicker this season than they have in previous years. This means that our peak production will be a week or two earlier than past seasons. We have good volumes available now and the peaches have outstanding flavor. The consumer demand for these peaches has been increasing each season. Our retail and wholesale customers are excited about promoting the Florida peaches this season.”
Yellow and white flesh peaches available
This season the company will be offering both yellow flesh and white flesh peaches. “We have been marketing the yellow flesh varieties of peaches since 2010 and this year our white flesh peaches are now starting to produce good volumes.These new white flesh peaches are absolutely delicious, and we are looking forward to building this program for many years to come,” Finch says.
Both the yellow and the white peaches are offered in multiple packaging options ranging from a twenty-pound volume fill box to a two-pound peach pouch. “The peach pouch has been popular with retailers this year,” Finch says. “We’re also currently packing our Florida blueberries and our Florida Valencia oranges. All three of these products, the peaches, blueberries and oranges, can be shipped together out of the same location.” Many of customers like the idea that they can load 3 commodity items in one location.
“We are excited about this year’s program and look forward to shipping the Florida peaches to our retail, wholesale and foodservice customers this season,” Finch concludes.
