Plum acreage in the Netherlands has shrunk a little in recent years. This year, that's, literally and figuratively, bearing fruit. "The last few years have been tight for plums. But prices are good this year. Reine Victorias are going for around €2," says Erik Kieftenburg of MJ Pronk in the Netherlands.
"There were surpluses in other years too. Now, however, we find ourselves in a different situation. There have even been occasional plum shortages. The surge of Spanish stone fruit is drying up."
"We can fill this in nicely with our plums," says Erik. "The holidays in the north of the Netherlands are also over. That's good for demand."
According to him, plum sales are mostly a domestic affair. "It's still a real seasonal product. And certain buyers like them. Fortunately, we have access to tasty plums this season. The Opal season's over, and the Jubileum variety's just about done. Now, we're switching to the Reine Victoria and Lazoet varieties. We'll continue with these for four more weeks," concludes Erik.
