India exported 2,46,133 tons of fresh grapes worth Rs. 2,335.24 crore ($334.79 million) in 2018-19. This growth is synchronized by the efforts of grape grower organizations and FPOs working in different parts of India. It is also supported by state horticulture departments and nodal body APEDA under the Ministry of Commerce & Industry which are supporting Indian Grape production & export growth and facilitating the farmers for their sustainable development.
More than 20 varieties are under cultivation, however, only a dozen are commercially grown. Major grape growing states are Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and the North-West Region covering Punjab, Haryana, Western Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, besides Madhya Pradesh. Maharashtra ranks first in terms of production, value addition, innovative packaging and exports accounting for more than 81% of the total output. The productivity is also the highest in Maharashtra, but due to recent weather conditions, farmers are facing several challenges in maintaining the quality and its trade commitments in different overseas markets.
India is one of the top producers of grapes and a leading exporter. Grapes cultivation in the country covers an area of 1,23,000 hectares. India’s major grape export destinations are the Netherlands, Russia, UK, Germany, Bangladesh and Middle-East Markets.
To address several important issues, Indian Grape Forum 2019 is being launched on 17th November at Nashik. Subject experts are invited to share their experiences on different aspects which includes Indian and Global Production Outlook, New Variety Introduction for Long Term Sustainability, Future Forecasting and Projection 2025, Indian Exports and Scope for New Markets, Domestic Consumer Demands and Preferences, Modern Retail Scenario and Online Deliveries, Consumer Demands in Domestic and European, ME & South Asian Markets, Role of Government Departments & Support Formats, Weather Forecasting, Insurance and Latest Technology Options.
"Mr. Sanjay Dave, Former Chairman, Codex Alimentarius Commission and Director APEDA will be delivering the overall outcome of the programme and will submit a document to all concerned organizations for future strategy. The aim of the event is to attract more than 250 decision makers from India and overseas markets including producers, wholesalers, importers, exporters, technology suppliers and supply-chain management companies", said S Jafar Naqvi, Chief Coordinator, Indian Grape Forum.
"Indian Grape Forum 2019 is planned to provide ample opportunities for growers, exporters, supply chain management companies, research organizations and concerned departments and support industries. This would be a platform for interaction and preparing a road map for future developments of Indian Grape Industry. This Forum will be a brainstorming meet for all concerned and an opportunity to discuss various topics", said Naqvi.
