New banana greenhouse in Nicaragua co-financed by Taiwan

On Tuesday, October 22, Nicaragua inaugurated new banana acclimatization nurseries at the national research center (CNIA). These nurseries are part of the actions of the Banana Development in Nicaragua project being developed by the Governments of Nicaragua and Taiwan and that aims at letting producers know the new technologies and tools for the cultivation of banana plants. Producers can purchase the plants at a lower price in the acclimatization nurseries, which have a storage capacity of 15,000 seedlings.

Better production and more quality
"The nurseries will help us to acclimatize the plants, which are available to all producers who wish to acquire them. It is one of the objectives of our Government that will benefit the banana sector. We are the best banana producers in Central America and we have the best plants and the best center, which are part of the results of this project that has been underway since last year," said Pedro Pablo Benavidez, a delegate of the INTA of Managua.

"This new technology for banana production will allow us to improve our production and make it safer, as each plant will produce at least 60 fruits," said Roberto Pang, ICDF technical coordinator.

$120,000 dollars were invested in the construction of the nurseries and greenhouses, where a total of 133,000 plants will be acclimatized every two months. A total of 738,000 plants are expected to be acclimatized annually.
