Ginger prices in China rising instead of falling after new season begins

Ginger harvests started in Changyi and Anqiu in October. Currently, the market is in a transition period where yellow ginger stock from last year has generally been cleared while most of the new crops have not yet made to the market, and prices have been rising. The purchase price of yellow ginger is about 4.5 yuan per half a kilo, having risen by 50% in two months. The price of newly available products is 2.6 yuan, significantly higher than in the same period last year.

Some purchasers said that since the beginning of the autumn, yellow ginger prices have risen by nearly 50% just in two months. The purchase price on the day of the report is between 4.2 yuan and 4.7 yuan per half a kilo. In recent years, ginger prices have been up and down like a roller coaster ride. As a cash crop, prices of ginger are volatile but have not varied significantly in the past two or three years.

The trading performance of many ginger markets shows that the whole market is in a transition period. Not only prices of last year’s stock of yellow ginger are on the rise, but new crops are also fetching high prices, with the purchase price of about 2.6 yuan per half a kilo, while that in the same period last year was about 2 yuan. The drought experienced in the production areas since this spring has affected production to some extent.
